Revolutionary Cuba 

Professor Benito AlbizaTruman State University Spring Break trip to Cuba
March 10-18, 2018


Old Havana, the city’s historical center, with Professor Benito Albiza (March 12)

Fortress at entrance to Havana.
British took Havana. 1762. Meant defense of patria.
Sugar cane. Massive importation of slaves. Doubling of city. Stages: old havana, between bay and capitolio & central havana.
Spanish style housing built around courtyard.
19th cent build out, and so moved outside of walls.
1860s-1959: big advancement. Vedado
Ceba tree, to commemorate foundation of city
2 squares, center of social actions:
1. Power (Plaza de Armas)
2. Cathedral square, for religion, and for people who have $$
3. San Francisco square, close to docks. Customs. Trade.
4. Plaza Vieja (market, slaves)
Havana so powerful that had authorization to make 4 squares.
Eclectic architecture, different styles on different floors because built at different times.
Gentrification happening now. 20 yrs ago couldn't sell houses, and didn't pay taxes. But now that is changing. Pay taxes on private transactions.
Slave routes.
Restrictions of UNESCO heritage site.
