There are other picture books and travel guides that could have been included here, but such coffee table books and Baedekers add little, if anything, to the historiography of the islands. Nonetheless, one such work that I would be remiss in not mentioning is Tui De Roy Moore's Galapagos, Islands Lost in Time (New York: Viking Press, 1983) inasmuch as Tui (1953-), who has lived in the islands since she was two years old, is an exceptionally sensitive observer and an extraordinarily gifted photographer.

Although some scholars, apparently including Aurelio Espinosa Pólit as well as Manuel María Pólit Laso, attribute this work to Jacinto Morán de Butrón, a guayaquileño, a Jesuit, and the author of La azucena de Quito (item 3417), I do not doubt that Alsedo y Herrera wrote it himself inasmuch as he was a competent and prolific scholar in his own right. It is possible, however, that Alsedo y Herrera made use of material provided by Morán de Butrón. N.B. The 1879, 1938, and 1987 Guayaquil editions of this work should be avoided as they are not wholly faithful to Alsedo, the editors and/or printers not having transcribed the original typeface correctly in every instance. A history of the post-conquest decline and resurgence--apparently beginning sometime during the early eighteenth century--of the autochthonous population of the former Corregimiento of Guayaquil. The decimation of the ethnic groups of the district began circa 1531 and continued at least through 1605, if not later than that. The data thus far recovered for the seventeenth century, however, are too scarce to determine approximately when the indigenous population of the central-south coast ceased to decline or when it began to recover. Also advances knowledge of history of encomiendas and repartimientos of the region. Expands upon the work of Estrada Ycaza, Hamerly, and Laviana Cuetos, especially as presented in items 6588, 5795, and 5984. Based on several years of original research in Spanish, Ecuadorian, and Colombian repositories.

San Ildefonso, near Pelileo, had been one of the largest and most productive of the Jesuit textile mills. Includes an analysis of the account books for 1777-1795, during which years the obraje and its haciendas were administered by the Junta de Temporalidades.
